Vehicle Advertising: Driving Customers to Your Business
Vehicle Advertising: Driving Customers to Your Business
Vehicle graphics have long been commonplace among large businesses as they fight to dominate market share while smaller businesses struggle to compete with significantly lower marketing budgets. However, due to the advances of large format printing, vehicle graphics are now one of the fastest growing advertising solutions for small business owners.
Twenty years ago artisans hand painted graphics onto vehicles and later, one-color vinyl graphics became the mainstay. However, in today’s exciting times, full-color vehicle wraps have become a tremendous solution to advertising a business or product. Whether promoting short term events or developing a strong brand for a truck fleet, vehicle graphics are affordable and effective advertising that never stops working for a business. Whether driving or parked, both day and night, vehicle graphics are an easy way to get a company’s message in front of potential customers. Wraps have become an affordable, eye-catching way to turn a vehicle into a mobile billboard.
When compared to other forms of marketing, it doesn’t take long to realize that mobile advertising is the most cost-effective and efficient form of outdoor advertising due to reaching more consumers at a lower Cost Per Thousand Impressions (CPM) than any other form of advertising.
These statistics were compiled by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America:
CPM (Cost Per Thousand)
o In the top 100 Television Markets a 30 second Prime time spot cost .78 per CPM
o In the top 100 Newspaper Markets a one third page black & white ad cost .95 per CPM
o In 23 Magazine Publications a 4 color, one page ad cost .35 per CPM.
o In the top 100 Radio Markets a 60 second drive-time ad cost .61 per CPM.
o The average for all forms of Billboard ads cost .18 per CPM.
o Vehicle Wraps – $ .77 per CPM!
• More than 95% of Americans are reached by media targeting vehicle drivers and passengers.
• The average American has traveled 302 miles in the past 7 days.
• One vehicle wrap can generate between 30,000 – 70,000 impressions DAILY!
• Federal Highway Administration study forecasts a sharp increase in the amount of time spent in personal vehicles and the number of trips per household.
• Fleet vehicle advertising boosts name recognition 15 times greater than any other form of advertising.
• 30% of mobile outdoor viewers indicate they would base a buying decision on the ad they see.
• The Outdoor Advertising industry has nearly doubled since 1993 from .19B to .09B in 2003. These numbers continue to grow each year.
The bottom line is, there is no more cost-effective advertising method available than vehicle graphics. In a city like Keller, TX with a population around 50,000 people, a wrap can generate over 8 million views per year! Obviously, in higher traffic areas such as Dallas/Fort Worth, a business can get even more attention.
Many people who get their vehicle wrapped park it outside of their business or near a busy intersection for maximum exposure. Unlike other traditional media like radio, television or even yellow pages, a wrap also works 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the best part is, it’s a one-time advertising expense. As a specific example, one study from 3M shows that you would have to spend over 0,000 on television ads to generate equivalent annual impressions of a ,500 vehicle wrap!
Vehicle wraps are also uniquely mobile. Would your favorite fast food restaurant let another business post a sign or banner on their lawn while the owner ate lunch? No, but a wrapped vehicle in their parking lot gets a tremendous amount of exposure in a very high traffic area!
Wraps can also customize/personalize better than any other method and have unique benefits over custom painting. For example, many photographic and artistic elements simply can’t be reproduced perfectly by painting or air-brushing. But the single most important benefit of wrapping over custom painting is that a wrap can be easily removed or repaired. In fact, wraps are often used to “protect” the original paint underneath, which actually increases the resale value of many vehicles. Most wraps that get damaged can be fixed a lot easier than any custom paint job because your design can be reprinted just like when reprinting on a home computer. Most vehicle wraps are also durable enough to be taken through car washes just like any painted vehicle.
When purchasing a vehicle graphic, material choice is a very important element in vehicle graphic projects. Unfortunately, many sign shops will install intermediate (interior) vinyl onto a customer’s vehicle to increase their profit. Using the proper material is even more important on vehicle wraps as there are many sub-par materials that can be installed on a vehicle and will fail quickly. The problem is, many customers won’t know if an intermediate vinyl was used until 2-3 years later when their wrap begins to crack and peel. In addition to using premium vinyl, laminating the wrap is highly recommended for further protection against marks, abrasions, and fading. If premium vinyl and laminate is used, most wraps should last between 5-7 years.
Once the graphic is printed and laminated, it is then carefully applied to the vehicle. Full wraps cover most or all of the paint on a vehicle while partial wraps cover only part of the vehicle. Even though Full Wraps are more expensive, they give a larger “canvas” for a designer to work with and therefore give the vehicle graphics more visual impact. In addition, Full Wraps protect all of the original paint underneath instead of just part of the paint. This is critical when the wrap is removed since fading and scratches can result on the unprotected paint of a Partial Wrap. As a result, Full Wraps tend to protect or even increase the resale value of vehicles more than Partial Wraps. Graphics can even safely cover the glass and windows which allow individuals inside the vehicle to see out while those outside see the company’s message.
